SHOCK OF THE HOUR: President Obama Re-elected To Second Term; GOP, Pundits Dumbfounded As Voter Suppression Attempts Fail
In one of the most closely watched elections in recent memory, President Barack Obama was re-elected to a second term in the White House. Voters turned out en mass to cast their ballots despite extremely long lines, Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath, and repeated attempts and reports of voter suppression by Republicans to thwart the election.
Unbought and unbossed, President Obama beat Republican challenger Mitt Romney the former governor of Massachusetts who along with his running mate, Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan appeared as staunch relics of old school Republican ideology and values replete with the tale of two Americas-one for the rich and one for the poor. Romney's repeated gaffes, constant flip flopping on the issues reminiscent of a chameleon candidate, repeated reference to the 'Five Point Plan' that wasn't, tenure at Bain Capital, secrecy surrounding his tax returns, and hidden camera comments regarding the 47% of the country ultimately proved to be his undoing.
Mitt Romney's tenure as governor along with his business acumen proved to be no match for President Obama's track record on issues most concerning to Americans: the economy, job creation, immigration and foreign policy. He could not sufficiently nor definitively give answers on how he and Paul Ryan would guide the country if given the chance. The few explanations that they did provide were few and far between.
The Presidential Debates and sole Vice Presidential debate only brought confirmation to many of how dissolutioned and disconnected Romney and Ryan were with average Americans. Both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan were more confident in deflecting to President Obama's promises made versus kept than in truly laying out a vision and blueprint for the country. Neither could offer any viable solutions on strengthening the Middle Class and were staunch defenders of keeping tax cuts low for the wealthy while doing little to nothing for the poor. Romney didn't help himself when he went on national television and declared that he wasn't concerned about the poor because the poor had a safety net in welfare. He also spared no expense in his feelings about the Middle Class and the poor when he was secretly videotaped stating that 47% of the country was/is codependent on the government to take care of them.
Romney and Ryan provided no answers on the issue of immigration specifically on the matter of immigration reform. Romney's answer to illegal immigration? Self-Deportation. On the issue of border patrol and control, Romney spoke of being committed to strengthening the border crossings but never revealed how leaving the matter which has become an issue of public safety and law and order- up in the air.
The Republican party did not help matters for themselves when several media outlets began receiving reports from voters and even elected officials of widespread voter intimidation and suppression. States across the country began enacting decades old voter laws on the books that had rarely been used in an effort to stop high voter turnout. All of these efforts were met with voter resistance and challenges from the high courts.Reports even surfaced of voter machines reversing votes. All of these efforts proved to be in vain as voters turned out to cast their ballots some waiting in line into the wee hours of the morning.
President Obama was proclaimed the victor shortly after 11:15 pm. Winning the key battleground state of Ohio put the President over the top. The President also won every battleground state except one. The President had 323 electoral votes over Mitt Romney's 203. There was little Romney could do but watch as his six year quest for The White House came to an end. Clearly unprepared for a loss, Romney gave a short five minute concession speech thanking his wife Ann, running mate Paul Ryan and supporters, many who had tears in their eyes.
Meanwhile at the McCormack Center in Chicago, President Obama emerged on stage with the First Lady and daughters thanking Americans for their trust for him leading the country for the next four years. He pledged to work harder and do more in his second term included bringing a divided country and divided Congress together. The President continued to reiterate his plan to keep America moving forward and continue to be a champion for all Americans. He stated that he was more committed than ever to fulfilling his promise of hope and change that first brought him to the White House.
Shocked Republicans from House Speaker John Boehner to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell found themselves having to congratulate the President while coming to grips with such a stinging loss. Discontent and disdain evident on their faces. Both men promised to work with the President to do what is best for the country.
In the end, as the first term of President Obama's concludes and another election season comes to a close, let us all move forward and be prayerful for our leadership.
